Monto State School opened on 25 January 1926, with 28 pupils responding to the first roll call. It was one of many schools that opened as the railway line was developed. The first teacher was Miss K. Hanvin and she stayed at the school for a year and a half.

Rural school activities began in July 1940 and included woodwork, tinwork, dress making, cooking and preserving. There was one rural school building for the girls and another for the boys. Once a week students from outlying schools attended for rural school work.
Today Monto State School has an enrolment of more than 100 students. Students study English, Maths, Science, HASS, The Arts, LOTE (Japanese) and Physical Education (PE).
Students in Year 4 and up are given the opportunity to learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument and participate in teh school band.
Students may also choose to be involved in a variety of extra-curricular sporting events. Monto State School partcipates in interschool sport on Fridays and is part of the Monto District sporting cluster, which provides athelets with pathways to North Burnett and Wide Bay school sport.
