Monto State School was opened on the 25th of January 1926 with 28 pupils responding to the first roll call. It was one of many schools that opened as the railway line was developed. The first teacher was Miss K. Hanvin and she stayed at the school for a year and a half.
Rural school activities began in July 1940 and included woodwork, tinwork, dress making, cooking and preserving. There was one rural school building for the girls and another for the boys. Once a week students from outlying schools attended for rural school work.
Today Monto State School has an enrolment of more than 100 students. Students study English, Maths, Science, HASS, The Arts, LOTE (Japanese) and Physical Education (PE).
Monto State School will be turning 100 in 2026. All past students, staff and families will be invited back to celebrate 100 years of education in the Monto community.
